Aims and Objectives of

Guidance and creation of a steady pathway from play school to full time education.

Development of a firm foundation for the National Curriculum.

Provision for learning within an educational environment for under 5's.

Development of social skills and confidence in forming relationships with others.

Encourage respect for themselves and others.

Typical Session at

The day starts at 9.30 with register and discussion time and ends at 12.30. There is a mid morning break between 10.30 and 11.15, which includes a drink and snack plus outdoor playtime - weather permitting.

Discussion Time

It is so important to develop competence in talking and perhaps even more important, in listening. We will discuss exciting issues of the day - birthdays, snow, sunshine, flowers and animals.....any new experiences. Conversation will be allowed to flow spontaneously, with thoughts and ideas coming from the children especially.

Classroom Time

Upstairs at The Red House, in the classroom, more formal aspects of education take place, including the most important - Literacy and Numeracy skills. We teach the children to read using phonics. We sound out and blend the letters. The pupils enjoy learning sounds and feel excited when they can read a word. We always reward the smallest achievement with praise. They will write the shapes of the letters as they become familiar with them. In mathematics, the children will be sorting into size, shape and colour. They will be counting and matching as well as learning to recognise written numbers to 10 and their value. In simple practical ways children will be introduced to addition and subtraction.

Mid Morning Break

Children will be provided with a choice of drinks e.g. hot chocolate, hot or cold milk, cold filtered water. The snack will consist of biscuits, fruit or toast etc.

Outdoor Play

Sometimes the children will be playing in "The Little House", or riding bicycles and other wheeled toys. At other times they will be using bean bags and balls, gaining valuable co-ordination in throwing and catching skills. During outdoor play the children will find out about the natural world - looking at flowers and trees, planting seeds and talking to and observing the many animals at the School including a goat, ponies, chickens and cats. Five acres of gardens and field, mean that the children will never have to leave the school for their nature walks. There is ample space within the grounds to provide a safe environment for outside learning during all four seasons.

Indoor Construction and Games

Large building and making toys, bricks of all shapes and sizes and jigsaw puzzles enable the children to develop dexterity skills. Railways, cars and garages provide endless games using imagination. Equally important are board games, children learn to take turns, to count the white spots on the dice and then count spaces on the board. So much can be learned in this way, simply by playing.

Arts and Crafts

All children love to express themselves with colours on a large sheet of paper. They can illustrate their feelings and ideas using a variety of materials in our craft room, learning to explore textures, colours and developing hand-to-eye co-ordination using pairs of scissors, paints, crayons and play-doh.

Singing, Poems and Stories

Each day's session will finish with stories or poems and songs. All these will further enhance listening and participation skills.

Most of all during all of these activities, the children will have a lot of fun and experience a sense of pleasure and achievement in all that they do. "
